Shore Facilities
Summary | Project Cargo | Complex Towing | Hopper Barges | Shore Facilities | Container Feeder
Short-Sea-Shipping isn't new to the Great Lakes. It flourished for decades in the multitude of small ports dotting the Great Lakes and the St Lawrence. The domination of marine transportation by large bulk freighters slowly saw these facilities close up, to the point where now, there are few viable small port facilities. This is recognized as one of the impediments to the resurrection of Short-Sea-Shipping in the Great Lakes.
At MarineLink we recognize this as both an obstacle and an opportunity. We understand that the most efficient place to move your cargo to or from may not be an existing facility. With the construction of the new ethanol plant in Courtwright there was an opportunity to service both Canadian ethanol plants and US millers with a dedicated grain barge service between Toledo, Ohio and Wallaceburg, Ont. This offered a solution to the trucking issues those customers were having due to border congestion. To facilitate these movements of grain in the East end of Lake Ontario we worked with town officials to build a loading and storage facility in Wallaceburg Ontario.
Wallaceburg is just the beginning. As new routes and opportunities arise, we are willing to work with you, the ports and our other partners to develop new and specialized shore facilities where these are needed.
